Cancer Center for Kids "5k Family Fun/Walk Run"
With the memories of the seemingly never-ending winter now
fading, and with spring beginning, it's time for the Winthrop
University Hospital's 4th Annual Cancer Center for Kids "5k
Family Fun/Walk Run." Once again, the event will be held at
Jon's Park on Grace Avenue, Sunday morning, May 1.
Thanks to the selfless support of our committee members,
corporate sponsors, merchants, and our participants, this year's
event promises to be the most varied and exciting walk/run yet!
The generosity of the corporate sponsors, a wonderful mix of
past and new contributors, cannot go unrecognized.
"Canon," with corporate offices in Lake Success, is a
co-sponsor. Canon will donate one of their digital cameras and
printers.
The entertainment emporium "Strike" has been a major sponsor
since the very beginning. Not only have they made a generous
donation, they are also lending their support to other aspects
of fund-raising.
Super Enterprises, Distributors of Marvin Windows and Doors
are a family run business located on Long Island. The family has
been a generous sponsor since the inception.
"Tiger Schulmann Karate" and "New York Health and Racquet
Club" once again are onboard. Mike Stein, Deshi (instructor) at
Tiger Schulmann, will be at the walk/run, leading all interested
kids in an exciting interactive demo. Mike observed that this
important community event was a perfect setting for "the karate
philosophy of teaching traditional values such as honesty,
compassion, and generosity." The Manhattan-based NYHRC recently
chose Great Neck as its premiere Long Island location. Manager
John Wertenbach once again wasted no time in demonstrating
NYHRC's commitment to the community.
Edna Mashaal, a generous sponsor, has served the real
estate needs of the community for over 20 years (two of those
years as Edna Mashaal Realty) and believes that supporting the
Cancer Center's children and families is a wonderful way to
thank the community.
Penny Preville, a local award winning designer, is once again
donating another dazzling diamond necklace. Her beautiful pieces
are among the most sought after raffle prizes.
Tom Gubitosi again made a significant donation in his
mother's memory through the "The Marie Gubitosi Foundation,"
which was established to aid local underprivileged children. Tom
is the original owner of Coldstone Creamery in Great Neck.
This year's activities, food and entertainment will be
unprecedented. The legendary "DMC" will be attending for the
teenage sector and there will be strolling characters for the
younger set. Yoga, stretch and massage will be available before
and after the walk/run.
All of the raffle prizes and gifts are donated by merchants
from Great Neck and surrounding areas. Along with all of our
fabulous baskets, there will be a raffle for a Trek Mountain
bike and a Yankee "Fan-tastic Basket" with two skybox tickets to
a game of your choice along with other memorabilia.
This year the walk/run is in honor of Genelle Taney and her
family. Genelle, a Great Neck teenager who recently died from
cancer, embraced and lived her life to its fullest. Genelle was
loved and admired by everyone who knew her. Genelle was treated
at the Cancer Center for Kids and she attended and supported
many events, always happy to give of herself, always inspiring
everyone who crossed her path. The entire community will be
coming together to support the family, as well as the Cancer
Center.
Registration will begin at 8:15 a.m. with the walk/Run
kicking off at 9:30. Starting at 11, there will be a free
shuttle bus available to take all participants directly to the
Great Neck Village Crafts Fair. Look for posters and brochures
throughout town so you can pre-register and get a free t-shirt!
For further information or to make a donation in Genelle Taney's
honor or to the Cancer Center at Winthrop University Hospital

shine!
